What MCP is, and why it matters for stock
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the open standard AI assistants use to plug into outside systems. A product exposes a small set of tools; the assistant discovers them and calls them on your behalf. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Copilot-style agents and most agent frameworks speak it. Inventory Inventory publishes an MCP server, so your inventory becomes something your assistant can look at and act on.
In practice: you open your assistant's connector settings, paste the server URL, and a sign-in window from inventoryinventory.com appears. You approve read access, and optionally the ability to record sales. From then on, “how many iPhone 14 screens do we have?”, “list everything below its reorder level”, “what expires before Christmas?” and “we just sold three of the blue mugs” are answered from live data, and a sale posted from chat is logged, deducts the soonest-expiring batch first, and triggers alerts, auto-reorder and Square or Shopify sync like any other sale.
Security is built on OAuth 2.1, the same mechanism banks and Google use for third-party access: short-lived tokens that expire in an hour, refresh tokens that rotate on every use, a consent screen that names the app and what it may do, and a Connected AI apps list on your profile where any connection can be revoked in one click. The assistant only ever sees items you marked “Include in API”. No AI runs on our side — the model is the one you already pay for.

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect Claude to my inventory?
In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and add a custom connector with the URL https://inventoryinventory.com/api/mcp. Claude opens a sign-in window from inventoryinventory.com; sign in with Google, approve the access you want, and the tools appear in your chat. In Claude Code, run: claude mcp add --transport http inventory-inventory https://inventoryinventory.com/api/mcp, then /mcp to sign in.
Does it work with ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT supports remote MCP connectors: in Settings, open Connectors, create one with the same server URL, and complete the sign-in. The same six tools are available, and sales recorded from ChatGPT are logged as coming from ChatGPT.
What can an assistant do once connected?
Read the items you marked “Include in API” — quantities, prices, cost prices, suppliers, reorder levels, expiry batches and locations — and, if you approved it, record sales. It cannot create, rename or reprice items, change settings, or see anything you did not expose. Every sale it records appears in your activity log attributed to the app.
Is it safe to give an AI access to my inventory?
Access uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE, the standard that Google and the major banks use for third-party apps. You approve on a consent screen that names the app and its return address; tokens expire in an hour and refresh tokens rotate on every use; any connection can be revoked from your profile in one click. The write tool asks the assistant to confirm with you before it runs, and it can never take stock below zero.
Does this use my Inventory Inventory AI features?
No AI runs on our side for MCP. The model is the Claude or ChatGPT you already use, and their usage rules apply. Our server simply answers the tool calls from your live data.
Which plan do I need?
MCP access is part of the Pro plan at $10 per month, alongside the AI features, imports, purchasing, the store integrations and the REST API. Free accounts can connect but tool calls are declined with an upgrade link.
